PROGRAMME NOTES
Overture from “The Marriage of Figaro” K.492
Grand Mass in C minor K.427
Soloists: Bonnie Hoke, Tatyana Rashkovsky, Kenneth Garner, Ed Bara.
Our season XX opens with this colorful and exciting celebration of Mozart’s 250th anniversary. Featuring solo debut by a gifted Russian mezzo-soprano Tatyana Rashkovsky.
The charming Figaro overture is followed by the incredible Great Mass. It was performed on August 25, 1783 in St. Peter’s Church in Salzburg, with his wife Constanze (herself an accomplished musician) singing the soprano solos. This unfinished mass is full of stylistic contrasts: the influence of Bach and Handel is evident in the great choral music, while Italian trends, both archaic and more modern, pervade the solo sections.
It is ironic that Mozart, after completing 14 Masses, left unfinished what proved to be incomparably his greatest liturgical works, the Great C minor Mass and the Requiem.
