Bach, So Familiar and So Little-Known!
Sunday, May 18 at 6:00 PM
Daylesford Abbey
220 S. Valley Road, Paoli, PA
Chorus and orchestra at the Abbey

The orchestra, soloists and chorus of the Ama Deus Ensemble, led by Valentin Radu, present the Fifth annual tribute to JS Bach in which we will offer a lively collection of his famous works along with very rarely heard gems: all performed on Baroque instruments, in Baroque pitch and in Baroque performance practice.

Soloists: Jennifer Graf (soprano), Tatyana Rashkovsky (mezzo-soprano), Ed Bara (bass), Thomas DiSarlo (violin), Sarah Davol (Baroque oboe).

P R O G R A M:
Cantata BWV 53 "Schlage doch, gewunschte Stunde" for mezzo-soprano solo, a single movement funeral composition.
Cantata BWV 82 "Ich habe genug" for bass soloist, solo oboe, strings, and basso continuo was composed for the Feast of the Purification of Mary and set to an anonymous text on the Gospel of Luke 2, 22-32.
Wedding Cantata BWV 202 "Weichet nur, betruebte Schatten" for solo soprano, oboe, bassoon, strings and harpsichord.
Violin Concerto in a minor BWV 1041
Oboe Concerto in g minor BWV 1056
Missa Brevis in A Major BWV 234 was written and premiered circa 1738.  This rarely performed gem is one of the shortest settings of the Latin mass (containing only the Kyrie, Gloria and Credo movements) for which Bach borrowed from some of his own cantata movements.

Bach and His Music for Oboe Sarah Davol. Baroque Oboe
From conversations with oboe soloist Sarah Davol, performer of modern and historical oboe, composer (on photo):

"I feel incredibly lucky that Bach wrote so much beautiful music for oboe and solo voice.  The way the Baroque oboe blends with voices is one of the reasons I decided to learn historical oboes... for me there's nothing like it!  A wonderful melding of sound and becoming one with the voice that I am playing with."

"In the year 2000 I had the honor of touring and performing in the places where Bach lived and worked.  He wrote much of his instrumental music in the peaceful little town of Cothen, which is still surrounded by fields and forest.  There is a brook which runs by the building where Bach lived.  It is a romantic place, and is where he fell in love with both of his wives, Anna Magdalena and Maria Barbara.  When I play Bach's oboe concerti, I keep in mind the serene town of Cothen because I think the joy of living there is reflected in his music..."

"Why today, more than 250 years later, his music still speaks to people's hearts?  Bach was a devout Lutheran who saw in the mathematics of music and science the underlying order of the Universe and a perfect expression of the Divine.  Bach believed music to be sacred, and the mathematical patterns it reveals - deeply profound.  His multi-dimensional understanding of music, numbers and the cosmos, combined with his pursuit of perfection and spiritual intent, lift his music above Baroque form and style and make it an eternal expression of the human condition."

Don't miss Sarah Davol's solo performance on May 18 in BachFest: in Bach's Oboe Concerto in g minor BWV 1056 and also in Cantatas 202 and 82, alongside vocal soloists.
