NOTES FROM THE MAESTRO

Please be our guest on Sunday, June 8th, as we close the 2008-2009 concert season with Camerata Ama Deus, the new thoroughbred in the Vox Ama Deus "stable."  This exciting Mozart program will end with a Viennese-style champagne reception at the historic Thomas Great Hall for our audience and the performers.

I have tremendously enjoyed designing, rehearsing and performing two of the three Camerata programs so far.  It's been a dream of many years, 25 or so, since my previous chamber orchestra, The Juilliard Bach Players, ended its five year stint in New York's Lincoln Center.  It's great, it's fun and it's educational - for students and grownups alike.

I enjoyed the "Yours Truly" live notes interspersed with the great music, and I believe so did the audience!  At each concert we also had "featured instruments" (such as the baroque oboe, violin, and the unusual theorbo) explained and demonstrated live by their respective expert orchestra members - another very original feature.

This time the featured instruments will be viola and piano, including answers to such questions as "What are the main differences between the viola and its sisters: violin, cello or double bass?" or "When, where, and by whom was the first piano built?" or "How many extra keys does the Imperial Grand Piano have?"  I  think that the more people know about the music they hear, the more they enjoy it.

I am very much looking forward to this grand Season Finale featuring Mozart with the double premiere of the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra  and Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 20 in d minor when, for the first time, I will be both soloist and conductor!  Incidentally, this very piece marked my debut with the Bucharest Philharmonic back in 1965.

Valentin Radu portraitI also look forward to a very exciting new season '08-'09 as we plan to continue the same format for the Camerata concerts, with live notes and programs featuring one composer per concert: Bach in October at Gladwyne Presbyterian Church, Handel in February at Daylesford Abbey, and Vivaldi in April at The Kimmel Center.

I hope you can join us!

Sincerely Yours,
 Treble clef sign
Valentin Radu
